A Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) is an industrial computer that helps automate processes, such as those found in manufacturing plants. These devices are often used to control electric motors, sensors, valves, and other equipment that requires real-time processing. They are also commonly used in systems that allow users to monitor and control manufacturing process and machine data from remote locations, such as supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) or human-machine interface (HMI) systems. Programmable Logic Controllers are solid-state computers with customized instructions for performing a task. They are typically programmable using a software application on a personal computer or a handheld programming device. The program can be downloaded to the PLC directly or over a network. Along with controlling machines, Programmable Logic Controller can also be used for a variety of other applications. For example, they can be programmed to run alarms when certain conditions occur, such as a high operating temperature or a machine malfunctioning. They can also be used for process monitoring and record keeping, such as recording operating temperature or the amount of product produced during a particular shift. A PLC can be installed in a number of different places. Some of the most common locations are in utility plants, auto assembly lines, and chemical processing facilities. They are also used in conveyor systems, food processing machinery, and other types of equipment. Typical features of a PLC include: The CPU: Checks input and output devices, performs arithmetic operations, and executes logic commands. The CPU also controls the memory, which stores fixed information and timer values. I/O: The CPU connects to various input devices and sensors, and then translates the received data into electrical signals for output devices like switches, relays, and motor starters. The I/O devices then convert those electrical signals into physical action, such as a motor turning or an alarm signal. Programming: A Programmable Logic Controller can be programmed to execute a user-defined program in a repeating cycle of input scan, program scan, output scan, and housekeeping mode. After each step, the CPU checks the inputs to make sure that the process has been successful and then starts again from the beginning. Ladder Logic: The most common PLC programming language, ladder logic is easy to understand and use for a variety of applications. It uses a series of loops and conditional branches to determine which outputs need to be sent out. Other Programming Languages: The number of PLC programming languages has grown in recent years, including Flow Charts, Sequential Function Charts, Structured Text, and Instruction Lists. Flow charts and structured text can be useful for determining the order of steps in a sequence, while instruction lists are often used to program multiple-step instructions. Recently in February 2021, Electric Power Construction Corporation (SEPCO) awarded a contract of supplying connected control, safety, telecommunications, and security systems to Honeywell.
